Author Micro Biography

Winston Churchill portraitSir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965), British politician, writer, and historian, was prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1940-1945 and from 1951-1955. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest political leaders of the 20th Century, and is certainly among the most widely quoted.
Among his most famous quotes is this, from a speech made just prior to the Battle of Britain during World War II: "Let us therefore ... so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour'."
Radio broadcaster Edward R. Murrow said of Churchill that he mobilized the English language and sent it into battle, "a spearhead of hope for Britain and the world."
Here we share not only some of Churchill's most famous quotes but a few others similarly inspiring yet less frequently heard.
